The Role of Methæmoglobin on the Leptomonad Phase of Leishmania Tropica, with Special Reference to Its Reversion into Leishmania Forms in Culture

چکیده
In a former communication one of us (Row, 1922) had pointed out that the flagellate leptomonad forms of Leishmania tropica reverted to the leishmania O-bodies and these made their appearance in the condensation fluid of NNN culture tubes inoculated with the parasite 2 to 3 weeks previously. These were described as the O-bodies, or resistant forms, and it is the presence of these in old cultures of L. tropica which was responsible for their infectivity in mice?even to the extent of inducing a generalized infection in them?indistinguishable from experimental kala-azar (Row, 1914). The observation on the infectivity of old cultures containing these resistant forms was confirmed by Southwell and Kirshner (1938)*. It was also pointed out (Row, 1922) that the reversion was due either to the concentration of the fluid

Stage-Specific Adhesion of Leishmania Promastigotes to Sand Fly Midguts Assessed Using an Improved Comparative Binding Assay
BACKGROUND The binding of Leishmania promastigotes to the midgut epithelium is regarded as an essential part of the life-cycle in the sand fly vector, enabling the parasites to persist beyond the initial blood meal phase and establish the infection. However, the precise nature of the promastigote stage(s) that mediate binding is not fully understood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS To address ...
متن کاملIdentification of Leishmania Species Causing Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR) in Kharve, Iran
Background: Leishmaniasis, especially cutaneous leishmaniasis, is considered an important health problem in many parts of Iran including Kharve, Khorasan Razavi province. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is caused by various species of Leishmania, each having a different secondary host. Thus, identifying the parasites’ specie is of paramount importance for containment strategy planning. The morpho...
متن کاملFrequency of PGP and MRPA efflux pump genes in drug resistance in clinical isolates of Leishmania tropica and L. major
This study aimed to identify PGP and MRPA genes in clinical isolates of Leishmania. The genes of pgpa (MRPA) and mdr1 (PGP) are involved in the drug resistance, their products act as dependent transporters of ATP (ABC Transporter) in the reflux of drugs from the cytosol to the outer space of the cell. Hence, 40 volunteers with leishmaniasis were randomly selected. Firstly, Amastigotes were exam...

Background and objective : Cutaneous leishmaniasis is an endemic diseases with important public health in Iran. The cinical signs of disease were seen as dry and wet forms. It is essential to distinguish leishmania species in every area for designing control of diseases. The morphology of leishman bodies in each speiecis are very similar and need to sensitive diagnostic method such as PCR to di...
متن کاملProduction and Partial Characterization of Monoclonal Antibodies to Leishmania
Background: Monoclonal antibody technology allows identification of amastigote-specific antigen in human tissue biopsies and search for a suitable vaccine candidate, which may induce a long lasting immunity. Objectives: Production and partial characterization of seven monoclonal antibodies against Leishmania tropica promstigotes. Methods: Seven murine monoclonal antibodies of the IgG isotype we...
